The Oldest Art (2022) Quilt by Kim F. Hall

The Oldest Art (2022)

Kim F. Hall

Cotton, machine pieced

Machine quilted by Sylvia Hernandez, NY

Kim F. Hall:

In 2021, the African-American Quilters of Baltimore (AAQB) organized a virtual Sudoko quilt challenge. The instructions were very specific, so It was the perfect project for someone dealing with anxiety over brain fog and an uncertain health prognosis. It also helped me practice sewing straight seams again before working on my Harriet Tubman quilt. This was an opportunity to use the fabrics I began to collect after a trip to Australia where I was exposed to the art of Emily Kame Kngwarreye. The fabrics are made in partnership with indigenous Australian women artists: when possible I incorporated their names from the selvages into the label on the back.
