The Story We Sew: Community Quilt

Artist:

Carter Watts

Hand sewn appliqué squares, Machine pieced and quilted

Carter Watts: Created with the aim of bringing people together, the Story We Sew is a community quilt created by many hands. Contributors were asked questions to prompt their squares and I invite you to reflect on them as well:

What are some ways your community has shown up for you recently?

How does the society we live in impact your dreams/hopes?

How do you support your community?

Write about your hopes and dreams… What are they?

Do you see your dreams/hopes as feasible? Why or why not?

Are you dismantling any beliefs right now? How are you doing this?

How do you show love?

What are some small acts of resistance you perform in your daily life?

After reflecting, participants were guided in the sewing process!

Contributors include:

Enshalla Dunlop, Mary Rocco, Miriam Neptune, Lucia Santos, Gelmira Gourgel, Isis Washington, Sebastiana Hobey, Anum Homid, Margaret Bourne, Styopa, Madison Ryan, Destinee Thom, and more who wish not to be named! All of their stories and experiences form this quilt. Thank you to all who contributed! Thank you to the Barnard Office of Community Engagement and Inclusion and the Barnard Design Center!
