Kim F. Hall: Ntozake Shange famously wrote, "Where there is a woman there is magic," but women around the world also know that where there is a woman, there is work. I bought this panel at a quilt show because I loved that it showed the beauty of women doing their everyday chores. It was taped to my wall until the book Blended Borders inspired me to make a quilt with new techniques using fabrics already in my stash. I hope the leaves in the border evoke the dense rain forests of Indonesia and that the folds and circles in the bottom suggest the islands' mountainous terrain. Bill Magargal, who did the machine quilting, suggested using the hints of gold metallic thread and extra batting in the brown rows to make the design stand out even more.
