Kim F. Hall: I had participated in Block Lotto, the online Block of the Month group for a couple of years without winning any of the raffles, so this year I decided to make the blocks for the year in complementary colors so that I would have blocks if I won or not. “Liberated quilting” is an improvisational style made mainstream by Gwen Marston, but it owes a lot to Black quilting, particularly the Gee’s Bend quilters. It was also the year I was on an ACLS Fellowship, so I was feeling especially liberated!
