Interpretation and Notetaking Services
If students need accommodations to facilitate communication (e.g. an interpreter or notetaker), the students should make plans to ensure that these support personnel accompany them when they attend a tutoring session. Student Support Services advises that they need at least a week of notice if students will need interpretive services, so students should contact this office in a timely fashion to ensure that they have this assistance prior to a scheduled tutoring appointment.
Support Personnel in Tutoring Sessions
Interpreters or notetakers may attend face-to-face and online tutoring sessions so that they may assist the student in communicating with the tutor. If students need communication supports and anticipate having an online tutoring appointment with one of FSCJ’s tutors, they should contact the tutor in advance to request an appointment so that the tutor may send a direct session access link to the student and any support personnel who need to accompany them to facilitate their work in a session. Tutors’ college e-mail addresses may be found on the FSCJ website. Brainfuse’s professional tutors do not provide options for advanced scheduling of appointments, so students who need to include support personnel in a session should choose the Tutor Match option that is staffed by FSCJ’s tutors.
Scope of Tutoring Assistance
The department’s tutors provide supplemental academic assistance to students outside of class time in structured, time-limited tutoring sessions in one of the facilities or in the Brainfuse online tutoring platform. Tutors are not available to attend class with students, to sit with them as they work on homework assignments, or to assist them with notetaking functions. If students have accommodation needs that would require College personnel to accompany them in class or in the department, they should work with Student Support Services to arrange for these kinds of supports.
