Narrow-Minded Noah

Delaney McArthur and Morgan Henze

Background

Noah is twenty-nine years old and is a facilities management supervisor for his city’s local government. He has advanced knowledge about facilities management and has a great skill-set in maintenance. While being a supervisor, Noah has created efficient processes for the city, updated safety guidelines, and has shown great competency in his work.

The Dilemma

Noah's employees and other local government managers have been complaining to Human Resources about his lack of human skills. For example, Noah can’t communicate well with his employees and what tasks he needs them to complete. Additionally, Noah is having trouble creating professional relationships with those he works with. There is also a big disconnect within his team and those Noah reports to.

Decision-Making Process

Noah meets with his supervisor to discuss facilities management updates. His supervisor mentions others' concerns with his actions recently. His supervisor meets with Human Resources to talk about what can be done to improve his skills.

The Decision

Noah is referred to in-house leadership training to help him improve his interpersonal communication skills and ability to connect with his coworkers. Noah’s supervisor will check in with him after a few months to evaluate progress made.

The Outcome

After a few progress checks, Noah’s interactions have made strides of improvement in social skills within his subordinate and supervisor groups. Noah still needs to improve upon the forming and nurturing of relationships with his coworkers, but after acknowledging his insufficiency and gaining the right pathways to improve, it’s very likely he will soon be proficient.

Discussion Questions

  1. Noah is one of many young men in their industry who struggle to connect. What can others take from Noah’s story to create proactive skills?
  2. How does the skills theory come to play in this situation?
  3. Do you think it’s better to have more human skills or technical skills?
