Background
Ms. Scott is a middle school principal with 450 students that attend her school each year. After assessing her staff, she decides to use a servant leadership approach with her team. Ms. Scott wants to help her staff to handle day to day operations of the school building.
The Dilemma
Ms. Scott is working with a new team of paraeducators and teachers. She needs to train her new staff. Ms. Scott wants to implement new training into the staff's Professional Development days. Ms. Scotts needs to help the staff get trained in Behavior intervention and classroom management. Ms. Scott needs to use a servant leadership approach to help get her staff trained so they can handle day to day problems inside their classrooms.
Decision-Making Process
Ms. Scott started Friday evening meetings to help provide staff with a safe space to voice concerns. Ms. Scott also added a new staff teacher mentor program to help new staff get more comfortable.
The Decision
Ms. Scott implements a servant leadership approach to help staff get trained on behavioral interventions and classroom management Ms. Scott and staff participate in a professional development day twice a month. Ms. Scott also decided to implement a new teacher mentorship program that paraeducators and teachers can participate in to help to train and to reduce the workload. Ms. Scott also mentored new paraeducators and teachers helping to teach them new skills in classroom management.
Outcomes
New paraeducators and teachers gained experience and improved classroom management. The workload decreased, and new teachers were ready to become mentors; the principal, Ms. Scott, was prepared to hire additional staff. Since Ms. Scott applied a servant leadership approach, her staff was motivated to learn new skills and became mentors teaching new skills to new paraeducators and teachers. Ms. Scoot engaged her staff and reduced workloads, and improved student support.
