Ring is a minimal steel structure that functions less as an object to be viewed than as a social instrument to be used. Formed from a continuous 3/4" steel bar bent into a five-foot circle and lifted eighteen inches off the ground on six legs, it draws a single line through space. The circle has an entry point, but no preferred vantage point, and no built-in hierarchy. Instead, it organizes attention laterally, asking people to relate to one another rather than to a dominant focal point; an empty center.
As a boundary that remains permeable, Ring makes visible how public space is shaped by simple markers. The raised edge turns an abstract line into a legible threshold: to step over it is to enter; to stand outside is to hold distance. In this way the work frames questions of belonging, access, and participation. Who approaches? Who feels entitled to cross the line? Who chooses to remain outside? The piece does not dictate behavior, but it clarifies that even minimal forms can structure social relations.
