Purpose
Self-Evaluation & Delivery Project
by Mackenzie Marquess
The purpose of this assignment is to help students identify and evaluate elements of delivery in a speech. Doing a self-evaluation has the benefit of reflexivity and offers an opportunity to practice good rehearsal strategies. This assignment provides an opportunity for students to critically evaluate their own speaking, and improve based on comments.
Learning Goals
- Be able to identify and evaluate different elements of delivery
- Develop good speech rehearsal strategies
- Ability to make adjustments to the elements of delivery based on critical feedback
Corresponding Course Objectives
- Critically evaluate speeches—your own, those of your peers, and those outside of the classroom—according to the rhetorical principles covered in this course
- Rehearse public speaking to achieve greater confidence
- Revise and improve speeches and writing based on structured feedback
Assignment Description:
For this assignment, you will take a video of yourself delivering your informative speech. Upon completing this, you will watch the recording. While watching you will fill out the provided self-evaluation sheet with comments specific to your delivery of the speech and where you would like to improve. After comments are completed, you should begin rehearsing your speech, making changes based on your self-evaluation. After sufficient rehearsal time, when you feel you have addressed all of the comments previously made, you will record yourself giving the speech again. You should then compare the two videos. Write a short (½ page) explanation of the differences between the two. Where did you improve? Did any other part of your delivery suffer because of changes? What challenges did you face? How did you/did you not use rehearsal time effectively? This reflection should use the same delivery vocabulary we use in class and in the book.
Assignment Requirements:
- Take a video of yourself delivering your informative speech.
- Fill out the provided critique sheet. You should have at least 5 substantial comments on the self-evaluation sheet to address regarding the improvement of your delivery.
- Take a second video delivering your informative speech after targeted rehearsal time.
- Write a reflection about the changes made between speeches and your rehearsal time. The reflection should be at least ½ page long and no more than 2 pages.
- You will turn in: 2 speech videos, your self-evaluation sheet, and your reflection.
