Paving the Way for Shayla: Path-Goal Theory

Jacob Robinson

The City of Le Force recently hired a new Operations Coordinator to oversee Shayla, the Operations Technician. Shayla is incredibly intelligent and resourceful, especially when it comes to data collection. When given the opportunity, Shayla shows great pride in presenting her findings at meetings. However, she is typically unsure of herself when beginning projects, severely lacks social skills, is not open to suggestions or criticisms, often complains, and intimidates others in her department. The Department Head realizes that bringing a new Coordinator into the department would be difficult for Shayla; she did have the opportunity to apply for the position, but she preferred to stay as the Technician. Thus, the supervision of Shayla is in the hands of the new Operations Coordinator, Kiara.

Kiara is a strong and enthusiastic leader, with a bright disposition and positive attitude.  Having worked for the Operations Company in a different capacity, Kiara was aware of the challenges she would face as Shayla’s direct supervisor, but was up to the task.  After a few months in her new position, Kiara became overwhelmed with her workload, and decided it was time to begin delegating tasks to Shayla.  Just as Kiara expected, Shayla pushed back with every new assignment she was given, citing reasons why said task was not possible, or would be too difficult.

The success of the Operations Program is largely dependent upon Kiara and Shayla’s ability to work together, and to work efficiently.  Kiara realizes the difficulties she faces in a supervisory role will not be overcome by making friends with Shayla or being a strong, charismatic leader; rather she will need to adopt a style of leadership that will equip Shayla with the tools necessary to be an independent, confident employee.

Discussion

Which Follower Characteristics does Shayla exhibit? (Need for affiliation, preference for structure, desire for control or self-perceived level of task ability?)

Considering Shayla’s personality traits and follower characteristics, what would likely be the most effective leadership style for Kiara to adopt? (Directive, Supportive, Participative, or Achievement-Oriented?)

If Kiara is able to remove obstacles and define goals for Shayla’s success, do you suspect that an employee like Shayla would feel supported and motivated? If not, why?
